Spit Roast
A spit roast is where a giant steel pole is put through a pig or a hog and then roast over a fire. The roasting pit is usually a long skewer, and typically made from metal with a motor which turns the pig continuously for an even cooking. For outdoor cooking, particularly for people who are in camping, their roasting spit can be made from woods or other materials as long as it can be a source of fuel to make a fire. This kind of spit must be watched properly to avoid burning. Also, the skewer is revolved manually as it doesn’t contain any motor that will automatically operate it.

Spit roasting has been practiced for many centuries but the origin is hardly recognized. The only idea that is known is that ancient people used to hunt their foods and cooked it over a fire. The meat will be then left over the fireplace for hours while people will hunt for their next meal. This method is the only way where people in medieval times cook meats.
Today, there are spits that are equipped with a motor and allows the person to leave while the meat is being cooked. But before the modern equipment took hold, a spit jack will manually turn the skewer to ensure even cooking.
In modern homes, roasting spits vary in sizes. There are spits that can be inserted in a rotisserie oven, and there are some that are fitted over a gas or charcoal grill. These improved spits also have improved features such as they contain handles where people can safely have a grip on the handle without burning. This allows you to turn the meat as long as it needed for a better spit roast. Aside from pig or a hog, roasting whole chicken on spits is also common. You just need to know the proper turning of the skewer so that you can ensure that all parts are cooked evenly.
Usually, a spit roast is done during special occasions. For instance, in a birthday party where there are a lot of people to feed, the family prepares a big roasted pig for everyone. Having a roasted pig or hog in the table makes the celebration more joyful and exciting. It also adds an attraction to the buffet table.
Truly, spit roasting is still very much practiced in many countries around the world. The slow cooking process provides a tender and juicy meat which anyone can really enjoy. No wonder why it is still popular even in today’s generation. Roasted meats are also prepared as it is one of the major meals whenever there’s a family gathering. It is also the typical food of campers and hikers.
But for whatever reason, either you want to prepare roasted meats for a celebration or just simply crave for a roasted pig or chicken; you are free to roast your favorite as long as you have a cooking device for spit roast.
